N I K K I   S .   L E E : HE/SHE/THEY

Nikki S. Lee has placed herself in the shoes of many in an effort to question the notion of static identity. In her Project series (1997-2001), she explores various american sub-cultures by posing herself within them, whether she’s an exotic dancer, a swinger, or a bride. Each role she inhabits reveals the different ways women exist in various american subcultures; meanwhile, she reveals the fluidity of individual identity. By showing the possibility for one body to cross into various identities merely through appearance, Lee exhibits the importance of aesthetics to identity.
