Happenstance Series, 2015

Using old Art in America and Artforum magazines as source material, Happenstance is a series of small collages where what is contained within a shape or a silhouette is what was extracted from pages below. Fragmented texts become anonymous figures of artspeak. The works deconstruct the magazines, then reconstruct the fragments of articles, advertisements, images and reviews. They playfully explore figure/ground, positive/negative and image/text relationships. Through random juxtaposition, push/pull, in/out, here/there dichotomies occur by happenstance.
