T O M O K O   S A W A D A : HE/SHE/THEY

In Tomoko Sawada’s Decoration series the artist dresses herself in the recent fashion trend of Gothic-Lolita amongst Japanese teenagers, addressing the ritual of group aesthetics and questions of belonging. Using makeup, costume and facial gesture, Sawada emulates a femininity yearned by many girls, a femininity which exemplifies the decorative side of womanhood. Yet through Sawada’s repetition of the image of Gothic-Lolita, the question of individuality within a homogenous group blurs the meaning of belonging.
