WHY BUY More than 70 million photos are uploaded to lnstagram every day, and some might even qualify as art—thanks to William Eggleston. Before Eggleston, colour snaps were the preserve of magazine ads and billboards: only black-and-white could be art. Eggleston changed that perception by showing that colour did not mean unserious; his work deals with everyday life in America, dramatizing its mundaneness with richly saturated hues. The lady in this picture, on sale at the new Photo London fair, seems bemused to be snapped, but this is Eggleston's point: her bright daily doings are just as worthy of art as greyscale landscapes or war.
