Beahan and Laura McPhee met in a photography class in 1977, and ten years
later began a rare collaborative process, stimulated by the challenge of
agreeing upon what makes a picture work. Using an 8x10 view camera to chart
a visual map of the world as a peculiarly human construct, they transport
the viewer to mirage-like landscapes which reflect the paradoxes of human
interaction with nature. Their visions of Iceland, Italy, Hawaii, Sri Lanka,
California, and Las Vegas, appear as opulently detailed apparitions, which,
like Alice's looking glass, beckon the viewer to step through into another
world. |
